  • Title: Factorial structure of the Love of Life Scale with multiple sclerosis patients

Abstract

Purpose: The aims of the present study were to assess psychometric properties and explore the factorial structure of the Love of Life Scale (LLS), to develop a short form of the LLS, and to examine gender differences. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of 128 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) using the G-Power software was recruited from patients who were referred for follow up for their treatment at an outpatient clinic and from inpatients who were admitted to receive their medication in a neurological disease ward of the Hazrat Rasoul Akram General Hospital, affiliated with the Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. They responded to the LLS. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, a principal components analysis using SPSS Statistics software version 26, an explanatory factor analyses, and a confirmatory factor analysis via Lisler programs. Data were collected between November 28, 2020 and November 23, 2021. Results: Using explanatory factor analyses, two factors were extracted and labeled "Positive attitude towards life" and "Meaningfulness of life". Cronbach's αs were .92 for the long form LLS, and .83 for the short form LLS, respectively. The short version of LLS contained eight items, accounting for 61.58% of total variance. No sex difference was found in love of life scores. Conclusions: The LLS is a two-dimensional scale in the sample, with high internal consistency. Developing a program to promote love of life for patients with MS is recommended. This proposed program may be incorporated into treatment procedures with patients with MS.
