  • Title: Association of triglyceride-glucose index and memory-related diseases: a population-based study

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and memory-related diseases (MDs) in Chinese adults. Study design: This was a prospective population-based cohort study. Methods: Data were sourced from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), an ongoing nationally representative prospective cohort study. The TyG index was calculated using fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels at baseline from 2011 to 2012. MDs were assessed through self-reporting questions in 2018. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the association. Results: During a follow-up of 48349 person-years, a total of 180 incident MDs events occurred. The highest tertile of the TyG index was significantly associated with an increased risk of MDs compared with the lowest tertile (HR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.02-1.87; P-trend < 0.001) after multivariate adjustments. Finally, subgroup analysis showed that sex, age, BMI, and smoking status did not significantly affect the association. Conclusion: A high TyG-BMI index was associated with an increased risk of MDs. Our study suggests that monitoring long-term changes in the TyG-BMI index could assist with the early identification and prevention of MDs among individuals at high risk.
