Synapses, Circuits, and Brain Networks

Every thought, feeling, and movement depends on nerve cells passing messages across trillions of synapses, and on those connections linking up into circuits and networks. When signaling breaks down at any of these levels, the results can range from seizures and movement problems to depression, addiction, and memory loss.

This track follows the brain’s wiring from the single synapse to whole-brain networks. Sessions will explore how synapses form and change as we learn, the roles of chemical messengers such as glutamate, GABA, dopamine, and serotonin, and how development, injury, and aging shape circuits. We will also look at the reward circuits that underlie addiction, large-scale brain mapping, and how computational modeling and AI are helping turn circuit-level discoveries into targeted treatments.

Neuroscientists, pharmacologists, data scientists, engineers, and clinicians interested in the biology behind brain disorders will find this track especially useful.

Topics include:

  • Synapse formation, plasticity, and memory
  • Neurotransmitters and excitatory-inhibitory balance
  • Receptors, ion channels, and drug actions
  • Reward circuits and the neuroscience of addiction
  • Structural and functional connectomics
  • Network disruption in epilepsy, stroke, and dementia
  • Optogenetics and circuit mapping tools
  • Computational modeling and AI

Explore the connections that make the brain work, and what happens when they fail.
