Neuroinflammation and Neuroprotection

Neurons usually get most of the attention, but the cells around them play a decisive role in whether the brain stays healthy. Glial cells guard against infection, clear away debris, and support nerve signaling, but when they become overactive they can drive the inflammation that damages nerve tissue. At the same time, the brain's heavy energy use leaves nerve cells vulnerable to oxidative stress and mitochondrial failure.

This track explores the processes that injure nerve cells and the strategies that may protect them. Sessions will look at the roles of microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, the blood-brain barrier, and the conversation between the brain and the immune system. We will also examine oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death pathways in stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and ALS, and take a candid look at why many neuroprotective treatments that worked in the lab have struggled in clinical trials.

Neurology scientists, immunologists, pharmacologists, clinicians, and drug developers are invited to share findings that move this field closer to real therapies.

Topics include:

  • Microglia and astrocytes in health and disease
  • The blood-brain barrier in neurological disorders
  • Neuroimmune signaling and cytokines
  • Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Ferroptosis, apoptosis, and other cell death pathways
  • Imaging and fluid markers of neuroinflammation
  • Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective therapies
  • Translating lab findings into clinical success

Help us find better ways to protect the brain from injury and disease.
